What’s Happening at the FASB and Why?
G. Michael Crooch was appointed to a five-year term
with the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB)
in July 2000 and reappointed to an additional three-year
term in July 2005. Prior to joining the Board, Mr. Crooch
was a partner in Arthur Andersen where he was the Director
of International Accounting Principles in the firm’s
Professional Standard Group
Mr. Crooch was the American Institute of Certified
Public Accountants (AICPA) representative to the International
Accounting Standards Committee (IASC) and served on
the IASC Executive Committee. He has served as a member
and Chairman of the AICPA Accounting Standards Executive
Committee (AcSec). He also is a former member of the
American Accounting Association Financial Accounting
Standards Committee.
Mr. Crooch earned a B.S. and M.S. in accounting from
Oklahoma State University and a Ph.D. from Michigan
State University. Before joining Arthur Andersen, Mr.
Crooch was a Professor of Accounting at Oklahoma State
University.
Mr. Crooch will review the current FASB agenda and
discuss why the Board has chosen to address each topic.

Bean
CPA, CEBS, Managing Director, Compensation and Benefits,
KPMG
Current Trends in Executive Compensation
Tracy Bean is the Managing Director of the PNW compensation
and benefits group at KPMG. Tracy has worked extensively
with top management and compensation committees to identify
and implement strategic executive compensation and benefits
programs designed to attract, retain and motivate key
employees. She assists clients with the design, implementation,
benchmarking and administration of compensation systems,
incentive programs, retirement programs, and equity
compensation. She is a frequent speaker on the topic
of compensation including presentation to national groups
such as World at Work and the National Association of
Stock Plan Professionals. Tracy is a Certified Public
Accountant and a Certified Employee Benefit Specialist.
This session will provide an overview of the changing
environment of executive pay. Current hot topics will
be covered such as the new rules for deferred compensation,
stock option expensing and changes in equity compensation.
Participants will receive information about how companies
have responded to a variety of governance and regulatory
pressures. The session will also discuss IRS activity
in this area.

Chris Fawson is the Department
Head for the Economics Department, former Vice Provost
for Academic and International Affairs, and former Director
for the Center for Rural Economic Development at USU.
He speaks Mandarin Chinese and has traveled to many
parts of Southeast Asia, the Mediterranean, and Africa
on socioeconomic research projects for groups such as
the World Bank, the U.S. Department of Agriculture,
and the United Nations. Chris will present an economic
outlook for the intermountain region with a special
emphasis on emerging socioeconomic forces that are projected
to change state and federal public finance policy over
the next five years.

Tim
Larsen
CPA, Managing Partner, Squire
& Company, PC
360 Degrees of Financial Literacy
Tim Larsen began his career with Squire & Company,
PC upon graduating with his Masters of Accountancy from
Brigham Young University in April 1982. He has served
as managing partner of the firm since July 2004. During
his career he has worked in audit, tax, technology services,
and consulting. Tim was the first individual in Utah
to receive the Certified Information Technology Professional
designation from the UACPA, receiving the 33rd certificate
issued nationwide. He currently serves as a board member
for the Risk Management Association. Tim will present
on the 360 Degrees of Financial Literacy, the AICPA
and CPA State Societies’ initiative to support
financial literacy. This unique program encourages CPAs
to take a broad leadership role in volunteering to educate
the American public, from school children to retirees,
on financial topics that apply to their particular stage
of life.

2005 Tax Update
Gail graduated from Utah State University in 1963
as the outstanding accounting and business student.
He spent 26 years with the Internal Revenue Service;
3 years as a Revenue Agent and 23 years in Appeals
work. Since 1989, he has worked with Tanner LC, a
full service Tax, Assurance, and Consulting Firm.
In 2000, he was chosen as the Outstanding CPA in Public
Practice by the UACPA. In 2003, he received the Distinguished
Service Award from the UACPA. He has served numerous
times in leadership positions in the UACPA and ISPCPAs.
He is a member of the UACPA, AICPA and ISPCPAs. He
will discuss 2005 tax law changes, rulings and court
cases.
The sheer hell of the tax code and why it is essential
to keep current. Gail will review recent tax law changes,
court cases and rulings. He will also discuss possible
tax planning ideas.
He will try to guess where the new tax proposals will
go.

Christman
CPA, Senior Manager, Ernst & Young LLP
Women in Public Accounting
Tracy has been with Ernst & Young for over 12 years,
working in the Milwaukee, WI; Grand Rapids, MI; and
Salt Lake City, UT offices. She has served clients in
a variety of industries, including manufacturing, high
technology and healthcare, many of which are SEC reporting
companies. Her responsibilities include management and
coordination of multiple audits and audit teams, assisting
clients in researching and interpreting technical accounting
matters, reviewing financial statements and SEC disclosures
and filings. Tracy's presentation will include a discussion
about challenges in the current public accounting environment,
especially challenges facing women in the profession.

Mark is a CPA and Audit Director in
the Utah practice of Deloitte. Mark's expertise includes
areas of small business, not-for-profit organizations,
governmental units, retail, technology and manufacturing.
He leads services to the public sector, higher education
and insurance industry clients for the firm in Utah.
During his 31 years with the firm, Mark has served many
of the largest and most prestigious clients of the Utah
practice. Mark is currently fulfilling his second five-year
term on the Utah State Board of Accountancy. He is a
past President, former board member and member of the
Executive Committee of the UACPA. In 1999, he was awarded
the UACPA’s highest honor as Outstanding CPA of
the Year. He is a member and former council member of
the AICPA. For over 15 years he has served on the Special
Review Committee for the GFOA Certificate of Achievement
for Excellence in Financial Reporting. Mark will discuss
recent financial accounting decisions made by the FASB,
SEC, AcSEC, and IASB.
AnnMarie serves as an Audit Senior
Manager. She is a CPA with ten years of experience in
public accounting, specializing in the public sector.
She is a graduate of Utah State University with a Master’s
Degree in Professional Accountancy. She is a member
of the AICPA and the UACPA. Some of the clients that
she has served are the include Altair Nanotechnologies
Inc., United Carrier Network, Boart Longyear, America
First Credit Union, Salt Lake City Corporation, Utah
Retirement Systems, Utah State University, Dyno Nobel,
and the Children’s Miracle Network.
